Since its inception in 2018, Loveday’s Arts Programme has been making a profound difference to our Members and it has been my pleasure to spearhead this. The programme goes beyond mere creative activities, nurturing self-expression, creating community and enriching the emotional and mental wellbeing of Loveday Members.
Art has long been recognised for its therapeutic benefits, particularly in care homes. Studies have shown that engaging in creative activities stimulates cognitive function, reduces stress and provides individuals with a sense of accomplishment and purpose. At Loveday, we harnesses the power of art to tap into this potential, giving Members an opportunity to create and express themselves through a variety of artistic mediums, from painting and drawing to sculpture, mixed media and textiles. We also enjoy creating in different environments which have included gardens, parks, the Royal Hospital with the Chelsea Pensioners and art galleries. Members draw inspiration for their art from a myriad of subjects including pets, scenery, architecture, nature, relationships, travels and much more, making the work personal and meaningful.
Working closely with each Member, the unique abilities and preferences of each Member are honoured. By providing an array of materials and techniques, the programme accommodates different levels of mobility and dexterity, allowing everyone to participate in a way that feels natural and fulfilling. This personalised approach creates a deeper connection to the artwork and enhances the sense of pride in the artwork.
We regularly host art exhibitions that showcase the work of the Members, turning the care home into a vibrant gallery space. These exhibitions are celebrations of individuality, creativity and accomplishment. Family members, staff and other visitors have the opportunity to see the world through the eyes of Loveday’s Members, making the exhibitions a powerful reminder of the creativity and inner life that flourishes within. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing the pride of the Members when they see their artwork displayed.
For many Members, participation in the arts programme has rekindled old passions or sparked new interests. Whether it’s mastering a new technique or finding joy in the simple act of creating, the programme has given individuals a renewed sense of purpose and joy.
