Loveday was delighted to host a GP Educational talk at our Abbey Road Residence in collaboration with Re:Cognition Health. The talk was titled “Lecanemab: An Historic Moment in Alzheimer’s Disease”, presented by Dr Emer MacSweeney, CEO and Consultant Neuroradiologist at Re:Cognition Health, a pioneering brain and mind clinic.
Dr MacSweeney spoke about one of the most exciting developments in Alzheimer’s research with the introduction of a new medication Lecanemab and new biomarkers for the early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s which present a whole new paradigm of Alzheimer’s treatments.
Lecanemab has been hailed as an “historic moment” by international Alzheimer’s experts because it is the first drug to slow the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and alter the disease trajectory.
Lecanemab is a monoclonal antibody drug, designed to target and remove beta-amyloid plaques, which are one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease.
Lecanemab works by binding to beta-amyloid proteins, which are believed to be a major contributor to the development of Alzheimer's disease. By binding to these proteins, lecanemab is thought to facilitate the removal of beta-amyloid plaques from the brain, potentially slowing down or halting the progression of the disease.
Clinical trials of lecanemab have shown promising results, demonstrating a 27% reduction in the rate of progressive cognitive decline for those on lecanemab compared to those on a placebo, in an 18-month trial. Re:Cognition Health is one of the world’s leading clinics for delivering international clinical trials for Alzheimer’s and other causes of dementia was one of the UK centres to conduct the lecanemab clinical trial.
Overall, lecanemab represents a potentially significant advance in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, which currently has no cure and limited treatment options.
Loveday is committed to education which includes educating members of the public, our Members, friends and family and the medical community.
